Winter Steelhead fisherman are a hearty folk. Despite the cold, wet, windy conditions my clients and I fly fished for Winter Steelhead, we drifted from the Irongate Hatchery to the Klamathon Bridge both days (Friday and Saturday). We landed numerous small Trout in the 6 to11-inch range but we did landed a few in the 12 to 17-inch class. The biggest fish was a 17-incher that weighed about 1.5 pounds. On Friday, we did hook up a 5-pound Steelhead but after a short battle the big Steely showed herself by jumping 2 feet out of the water and giving us our glow bug back. Steelhead are very good at freeing themselves from barb less hooks. After quite a bit of trial and error a small two fly set up consisting of two small light-pink glow bugs worked the best. We fished these under an indicator with two small slit shots to help them get down. All the Steelhead and Trout are feeding heavily on eggs right now and as sit right behind the Salmon reds. As the weather stabilizes the bite should pick, this rain will help move more fish up river.
Available days November 6-10, 13, 14-25, 27-30 December 1-31
