Good bass fishing reports continue to come in from Roosevelt Lake, but there is a change in conditions. The cooler water temperatures will allow fish to move to all depths of water.
Fish are being caught in 2-40 feet of water. Bass tend to become more scattered during the cooler months so anglers may have to do some experimenting to locate schools of baitfish.
The Salt River end of the lake is a favorite place to fish using crankbaits, jerkbaits and spinnerbaits. This area has flowing water that is slightly stained 5-15 feet deep. All of these factors make for a good reaction bite.
Anglers are also reporting bait schools on the surface, and in the middle of the lake, but also large baits schools can be found in the 30-40 foot range depth. A new line of custom baits that anglers will want to check out is trendsetterjigs.com. These baits, which started out as saltwater baits, have been redesigned and made smaller for bass fishing applications.
If you're a spoon fisherman, check out these baits. Finding a large school of bait should make an angler stop whatever he is doing and fish that school; however, other successful techniques include dropshot, Texas rig and Carolina rig.
The lake level currently stands at 36 percent full. The Salt River is flowing at 100 percent of its normal rate for this time of year, while the Tonto Creek has slowed to about 50 percent. The water temperatures are in the mid 70s during the day, but the cooler overnight lows continue to bring the water temperature down. The water clarity in the main lake remains very clear, with the slightly stained water on the Salt River end of the lake.
The Mesa office of the AZGFD has released a schedule for the next build of habitat reef balls. The next build is scheduled for Oct. 13-14 and what is most exciting is that these reef balls will be deployed into Roosevelt Lake. Volunteers are needed to support this project. This is a great conservation project for a bass club or youth organization. To get involved, contact Amberle Jones at akjones@azgfd.gov, or you can call Amberle at 623-236-7593.
