New Melones Lake level is currently at 1039.70. Very pleased that the releases on New Melones have been moderate and not taxing critical water levels on the lake this year. News on the impending approval, California Water Resource Board final decision to require unrestricted water flows from New Melones Reservoir (January thru June) can be found on mavensnotebook.com. Final comments to Ca. Water Resource Board's Delta Plan are slated for August 22. Its going to be a contentious highly charged meeting. If you are concerned as to what 6 months of unimpaired water flows from Melones and other Stanislaus and Tuolumne County lakes and reservoirs will do to the future of our communities, please get informed and take a stand for the future of our lakes.

We like to promote catch and release on New Melones. If you do so, provide us a picture and bring it in for a copy or email it to us at gloryholesports@yahoo.com so we can put it on the board or in the newsletter.

Anglers FYI: For anyone with a potential lake record please call us at the store and hopefully we can send someone to weigh, photograph and measure the catch at the lake. GHS is the unofficial recorder of lake records for New Melones, and we understand there is sometimes conflicting interest in the welfare of the catch, whether or not to release the potential record, sacrificing your place as a record holder for the lake.

We do promote catch and release. For potential lake records, record the statistics of the fish... length, girth, weight and photographed at the lake before releasing her. If indeed we can verify the information that is provided, such as a witness, comparing the scale used with ours, a photograph with the fish hanging from the scale and can see the scale weight, etc...then we can accept this as proof. If your catch has expired than indeed bring it in to GHS so we can record it here, and you can have it mounted!

TROUT

Look for Rainbow Trout deeper in the water column where the water is cooler for them, 50-85 ft. deep. Glory Hole Sports customer Moyer from Sacramento was trolling along Glory Hole Point at 70 ft., landing this nice 6 lb. 3 oz. Rainbow Trout. Moyer was trolling with a Hoochie/Chrome Sling Blade w. garlic scent.

Saul San Fillipo from San Carlos, Ca. was on Melones 8/01 trolling night crawlers down 75 ft. by the 49 bridge landing two nice Rainbows. Saul was using a flasher with his bait. 3.6 lbs, and 2.5 lbs.

KOKANEE

New Melones is having a GOOD year for angling Kokanee. The bite is not lake wide, you have to go find where they are holding but repeated back and forth trips trolling on locations where they are at will get you some good action and bring in limits. August 6, Chuck Newcomb landed a combo limit of Trout and Kokanee between the spillway and dam using Uncle Larry's Lures in green with rainbow flasher. Trout was caught at 30 ft. deep, Kokanee 80-90 ft.

BASS

We're not seeing the bass anglers like we do in the fall, winter and spring, seems they are fair weathered species, however some of the local hard to the core bass phenoms are having out of body xperiences fishing thru the nite and catching crates full of bass, ( of course releasing all fish caught.) Glide baits, jigs, carolina rigs, texas rigs for yur bass endeavors.

CATFISH

Glory Hole Sports annual Catfish contest is on the horizon. This year we are holding the contest in the month of October (AKA large catfish month) We will be holding signups starting in September. Catfish are coming out at night. Drop a line with some cutbait, hang a bell on the end of your pole and go fish. Tuttletown coves and by the dam have been good places to fish cats.

CRAPPIE

Pretty much anywhere there is shelter, shaded coves, structure, submerged trees, you'll find crappie. Using a glow light at night would be a great way to beat the heat and catch some crappie at the same time.
