The Wilson River has two different hatchery winter steelhead stocks, one of which is early returning, and most prevalent in the lower river, and return late November through the end of January. In contrast the broodstock hatchery fish return late December through mid-April, and should now be throughout the basin. January is a great month to be on the Wilson as both of these stocks are coming in as well as wild steelhead (catch-and-release only). The Wilson got a push of fish late last week and fishing was moderately good, but slowed early this week as the water dropped. Predictions show some weather coming in the next couple days which will likely have the Wilson high and off color for the weekend, but it should drop back into prime shape early to mid-week, and hopefully the freshet brings more fish. All the usual techniques are working, with the higher flows and some color stick to the larger, brighter presentations.
