The CDFW is partnering with a number of sponsors in offering a couple Free Kids Fishing events during the month of May in Northern California.  These events offer trout fishing opportunities for youth under the age of 16 that are old enough to help hold a fishing rod and help reel in a fish. With bait provided and a limited number of fishing outfits available to borrow for those without gear these events are a great way to introduce youngsters to the sport of fishing. There are also volunteers on hand to teach, encourage and help net the trout on the end of the line. Adults are allowed to assist the young anglers but cannot catch the fish for them.

The first event is to be held this Saturday, May 11 at the Lassen Pines Ponds located just off Highway 44 in Viola from 9am to 3pm. The location east of Redding sits at the gateway to Mt Lassen and the Hat Creek region and the event could  be part of a great family day exploring the area. Plenty of hearty trout will be planted to insure a great day of fishing for the youngsters so make sure to bring a camera to capture the memories and an ice chest to take home the catch of the day.

The second event in partnership with the  Mt Shasta Rotary Club will be held on the North Shore of Lake Siskiyou on Saturday, May 25 from 9am to 3pm. The venue is off North Shore Road at Lake Siskiyou  across the lake from the resort. Turn off  W.A. Barr onto North Shore Road and follow the signs to the designated parking areas. Bait, volunteers and a limited amount of loaner tackle will also be available at this location.

As always new volunteers are welcome and speaking as a frequent volunteer at these events, there is a special feeling helping a youngster catch what is often their first fish, seeing the happiness and knowing that you may have just helped someone become an angler for life.
