Striped bass fishermen are finding some superb fishing on both the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers with some experienced anglers checking in with full limits daily. Most of the fish range from 4 pounds up to double digit size 30 inches in length or more. The best method is trolling and the best lure is the Yo-Zuri in the red head/chartreuse and the silver/chartreuse Crystal Minnow, tipped with white plastic worms trolled at 3 mph. Most are using the deep running lures in 12 feet or more of water and the shallow running lures in 6 feet of water. Some anglers have been experiencing 20 to 30 fish per outing. The best bite is occurring on the smaller moving tides. During the larger moving tides there is an abundance of grass in the wa- ter, including water hyacinth, hydrilla, and witch’s hair constantly fouling your gear. The action should improve as we move into the fall months. If interested in fishing for sturgeon a good number have been observed rolling on the surface in Broad Slough off Winter Island. The best striped bass fishing is taking place of the West Bank of the Sacramento River and the best ac- tion on the San Joaquin River is off Eddo’s Harbor up to the Antioch Bridge on the troll.

The Delta salmon fishing hot spot remains in the Freeport area near the bridge where anglers are jigging spoons such as the P-Line Laser Minnow or Slammer Minnows in the dark color patterns. Several fish weighing as much as 30 pounds taken recently.
