Pyramid Lake

Pyramid lake is looking better with some clouds and wind in the forecast. Bluebird days have been difficult. I’m finding myself dropping my tippet size for the indicator to help fish feel more comfortable and willing to bite. I’ve been fishing 8lb test and focusing on deeper drop offs. The LCT have been more comfortable in water deeper than 12 feet. They’re not always holding on the bottom, but I believe they want access to deeper water for the safety of depth and cover.

Pro Tip: Trout do not have eyelids, and their pupils don’t dilate like ours do. Trout will use depth to regulate the amount of light that enters into their eyes. Find the depth that trout are comfortable at during different times of the day and through different light levels.

With clouds and wind in the forecast for the next couple of weeks, look for the LCT to get very comfortable in shallower water. Activity levels will pick up in addition to the weather, but also because water temperatures are steadily increasing and we are starting to see the smaller fish become more prevalent in the system. Midges are still the ticket, but don’t pigeonhole yourself into a single method. The retrieve bite can be surprisingly good during overcast windy days.

Pyramid Lake Flies We Suggest: Boobies (Spanish Olive, Cat Whisker, Diablo), Pyramid Lake Beetle, Bellyache Minnow, Jans Tui-Chub, Balanced Leech, Holographic Midge

Truckee River

Warmer temperatures in our region have really gotten these fish active! Were catching multiple big trout on most half day trips. Fish are really keying in on size 16 nymphs. Color has not seemed to matter too much, but something with some flash has been better than more natural presentations. Water levels are at the lowest they will be this year. This is producing extremely clear water and on a few occasions we have spooked fish on our approach to the river. European style nymphing has begun to become more productive as the fish have been moving into moving water to feed. I’m also happy to report that later in the evenings the streamer bite has begun to really become effective again. One of my favorite ways to target these bigger fish!

Flies we suggest: Spanish Bullet, Quill Jig, Hot Spot, Zebra Midge, Baetis Nymphs, Carotene, The Ticket, Para Adams, Para Olive,Psycho May BWO, ID Thief, Sculpzilla, Weirs Sculpin

We are booking the end of March and into April. This is a busy time of year so make sure you call today and reserve your spot to enjoy this great fishing!
