Shasta Lake is teeming with life on and below its surface. The trout, salmon, and bass are all preparing for their summer stay down in the main body of the lake where they will gorge themselves with Threadfin Shad beginning very soon. Right now the Crawfish and black ants are taking center stage as the predominant food source until the Shad show up lower in the lake to spawn. We saw surface temps warm to 70 degrees today and thats definitely a step in the right direction. We'll see the bite pick up in May and should provide lots more action for anglers on the lake. We're still catching the trout and salmon up pretty high in the water column, but I've heard of some trout being caught down deeper as well. Soon a consistent pattern will emerge and we'll be on a good bite through September before the fall weather starts to change the lake again. There is a Kokanee Power trout derby and a Redding Yamaha Sea Doo bass tournament on Shasta this weekend so if you don't like crowds, you may just want to find another body of water to fish this weekend. It was busy today and will be even more boats on Shasta this weekend. Good luck to all the anglers on Shasta weekend. Be safe and have a great time catching trout, salmon, and bass this weekend!
