Best bets for weekend fishing

  • We’re approaching the peak of the winter steelhead run in many areas. With the recent dry weather anglers should focus on smaller presentations in the deeper pools.
  • Anglers are ice fishing in several locations in the SE and NE zones, including Lake of the Woods, Fish and Diamond lakes (SW Zone), and Unity, Krumbo and Yellowjacket reservoirs.
  • Fly-fishers on the Fall, Metolius, Crooked and Blitzen rivers can sleep in. The best hatches, and fishing, will occur in mid-afternoon when water temperatures are the warmest.
  • White sturgeon retention is open in the Bonneville, The Dalles and John Day pools on the Columbia River.
  • When ocean conditions permit, anglers have landing nice catches of bottomfish and lingcod.
