The Wilson River has a wild broodstock hatchery run, meaning the hatchery steelhead here are from wild origin. As such they mimic the wild run timing, which peaks now through March. This will be one on the best bets for hatchery winter steelhead for the remainder of the season. The fishing on the Wilson has been slow to fair, and some steelhead are still getting caught daily despite the challenging conditions. The lower river (below Mills Bridge) will be the best opportunity for bright hatchery fish.
Most reports from bank anglers on the upper river have been poor, but we have talked to a few that are still finding fish consistently. When fishing low and clear water, using smaller, subtle presentations and stealthy tactics will improve your chances of success. In addition, fish will be holding in different areas than during ideal flows; target the head of deep pools and any pocket water where you can’t see the bottom.
