The cold temperatures and snow have made getting to the river difficult. Ice has formed on the river and a few inches of snow remain on the banks that are protected from the sun. It will take a few days of warmer weather and temperatures to get the fish back into a feeding mood, but it won’t be too long.

Before the storms fishing was good on the Truckee. As is always true for this time of year, quality over quantity is the goal and plenty of quality fish have been caught. Nymphing has been the primary way that we have been catching trout on the Truckee River, but with some unsettled weather in the forecast, look for some noses poking up on overcast days. Fly selection has not changed much from the last report. This is a great time of year to fish slower water and to be focused on presentation.

It’s the best drifts that will get the best fish.
