Salmon fishing has been good for boat anglers in the estuary. Some Chinook have moved into the lower river where anglers fishing with bobbers and eggs or sand shrimp have been picking up a few. Hatchery fish are making up about a 1/3 of the catch. This is only the beginning of the run, with the peak fishery occurring in late October to mid-November.
Anglers are reminded that the wild Chinook bag limit has been reduced this year. As part of the 2 salmon/steelhead bag limit per day, anglers can retain 1 adult wild Chinook per day and only 2 for the season. Anglers can look forward to a good hatchery return this year and few have already been caught.
Gear restrictions are in place upstream of river mile 2.2 through Nov. 3 so anglers should review river regulations before fishing. ODFW will be evaluating water conditions and may extent gear restrictions beyond Nov. 3. Anglers will want to check for any updates prior to fishing.
The bag limit reduction is in place to reduce harvest on older age wild Chinook.
