The reservoir is thawing, with open water present from the Island day-use bay north to Charleston. Deer Creek State Park staff are working to get courtesy docks in place as soon as possible at both the Main and Island ramps. The state park warns boat anglers that floating ice sheets can move at any time, so launch at your own risk. The ice at the Main ramp is receding along the shoreline, giving shore anglers 15 to 20 feet of open fishable water. The Wallsburg arm is melted back towards the campground, giving shore anglers ample area to fish via the free walk-in parking lot/access trail.
