What a difference a week can make. We owe the good news to the action of both fisherman and local guides, such as Matt Heron. Matt is somebody with tremendous respect throughout the industry, and we're grateful to him for raising the alarm on the Little Truckee.
We are now seeing a mix of water coming from the spillway and the bottom of the dam. The water temperature above the Boca inlet was 62 degrees as of 4:30pm yesterday evening with flows around 150 CFS. This is great news for the fish, which are back to happily sipping PMD in the evening. Thank you to those who chose to give these fish a much-needed break last week while surface water from the spillway at Stampede caused a dangerous increase in water temperatures on the Little Truckee, which posed a major threat to the health of this river.
If you're looking to fish the Little Truckee this week, dry flies are a great option right now. PMD and Caddis patterns will be the most effective options. A good presentation and 5x leader will help put fish in the net. Skating a dry during an active hatch can be another fun and effective method during the summer months.
Euro nymphing will also be effective. Blow Torches, Carotene’s and CDC Pheasant Tails will make a great anchor fly. For your tag fly, you can try small mayfly and caddis patterns such as Micro-May’s, Rainbow Warriors, and Caddistrophic Pupa’s. Using 5x or 6x for your leader is best.
