The lake has seen a bit of an increase in activity this week, however with all the other great options to be had this time of year, we wouldn’t say that this is our first choice of places to fish right now. The water temps have risen a bit and some of the post spawn fish are starting to feed with a bit more regularity, but there are still plenty of fish cruising the banks in search of spawning areas and spawning partners. These fish are not really looking to eat, so they are best left alone. The fish cruising just outside of sight are the ones looking to eat, and we recommend continuing to suspend midges in 4-6 feet of water, and keep them small and slim, around size 14-16. Red, brown and black are typically good colors to start with, but these fish can get picky day to day. Bring an arsenal for the day to swap out flies until you find the golden ticket. Another method that will be good right now, and expected to get better in coming weeks, would be the use of a float tube. Fishing a slip indicator with a typical leech and midge set up or stripping jigged streamers is a fun way to mix up how you fish this lake and can often pay out with some of the true giants found here. Last week Pyramid Fly Co. helped a client land a 23 pound fish with the use of their Watermaster boats. It’s great to see a larger fish caught after such a tough season, let’s hope there will be a few more before the season winds to an end in June!
