Surface water temperatures have been holding steady at 68-70 degrees. Recent angler activity has produced Rainbow Trout in the 20” range, although fishing has been slow for trout due to warm water temperatures. Approximately 7,000 Rainbow Trout averaging 9” in length were stocked this spring. Nightcrawlers as well as spinner lures, woolly buggers, scud patterns, and midge patterns should continue to produce trout for anglers. These fly patterns can be used on spin cast rods as well as fly rods. With warmer water temperatures anglers are encouraged to fish the early morning and evening hours to reduce stress on trout.
Anglers continue to have good luck with Largemouth Bass (5-10 fish per hour) using a variety of spinner baits and soft plastics to catch fish. Average size bass being caught is 12-13” with some fish hitting the 15-16” range. Due to the limited Bluegill fishery at Comins Lake, anglers are encouraged to release Bluegill catch so their population can continue to become better established.
Northern Pike fishing has been slow in response to warmer water temperatures but if anglers are persistent, they should be to get into juvenile and adult Northern Pike. Please note that NDOW has placed radio tags in several Northern Pike. Any pike over 24” in length that have transmitters can be removed from the lake. These pike will have an orange floy tag near their dorsal fin and a small antenna (~ 7” long) coming from their stomach. Please return these fish to the water for research purposes.
