The bite on the Truckee continues to get better and better every week. As temps begin to trend downwards, we are seeing the larger fish become a bit more present in recent weeks. The crawdad bite has proven to be good this august and dead drifting them is a great way to target bigger fish while presenting smaller bugs at the same time. You can fish these big meals under an indicator or tightline nymph them. For the indicator, it’s hard to beat dead drift crays and for tight lining the T.J. Hookers are continuing to get it done. Other bugs of note would be nocturnal stoneflies, BWO’s and midges, and we are also right around the corner from October caddis. To imitate nocturnal stones under the indo, it’s hard to be a Pat’s rubberlegs in 6-8 in brown. If tight line nymphing, give my brown/tan rocksteady stone a try in sizes 4-8. Other great flies for the river right now would be olive micro mays in 16-18, olive mic drops in 18-20, black or red zebra midges in size 18, or maybe even a san juan worm. The fish are a bit more spread out right now, and while we are still finding most of our fish in fast moving riffles or pocket water, don’t overlook the tail outs and bubble lines!
