The Truckee is in prime shape in the canyon section of the river. The Glenshire area remains low but is still fishing well all things considered. With the first snow of the year in town, we expect the last remaining grasshoppers to be just about done for the year going forward. The use of dry droppers up here will now be limited to October Caddis, which have been few and far between on the main river this year. At this point, as fish begin to move into slower water, using indicators will become more productive than dry droppers. Especially down in the canyon where there are deeper runs. I carried both the euro rod and the indicator rod when fishing this week and caught fish almost equally on both. I focused on the shallower medium speed water with the euro stick and dredged the slower tail outs with the indicator. With the indicator, I was able to cover bigger swaths of runs and fish further away from myself with ease, as well as fish unweighted flies like globugs (hint, hint) more effectively. While the euro rod may have fetched more fish, the indicator found the bigger fish, sitting just out of reach of the euro-nymphing angler. While the fish didn’t seem too picky during these stormy days this week, the bugs that did the best were brown stoneflies in sizes 8-10, worms, eggs, baetis and midges. The fish also responded quite well to attractor type nymphs such as size 18 duracells, blowtorches and CDC hustlers.
