The Little Truckee finally saw the increase in flows it needed and is sitting at +/- 120 CFS as of today. These flows are right in the sweet spot for both great dry fly fishing and excellent nymphing. Because we have been taking a long break from this fishery, we can’t give you any firsthand reports on it yet, but odds are we are going to head out there this week and give it a try.

Given that this is tailwater, the water temps won’t be affected by the cooler weather we’ve had, and we should see some active fish and bugs throughout the day. If heading out to throw dries, be prepared with some size 20-22 BWO emergers, as well as some midge imitations, make your leaders long, and don’t forget the 6x. The dry bite typically peaks mid-day here, with an average window of 11-3, but using dries before and after an emergence can still be great and you won’t be fighting the crowds quite as much during these “off hours.”

Because of the stable water temps, the nymph fishing will be good here all day, not to mention along most sections of the river at these flows. There will likely still be a few browns spawning in the weeks to come, or at the very least their redds will still be visible and vulnerable. So please remain very cautious where you are wading and if you have any questions on what to look for or how to safely fish around spawning fish, don’t hesitate to ask!
