Recent surveys show a surplus of brown trout in the river, averaging 11 inches in length. Brown trout numbers have become very dense in other rivers in Utah, affecting the size and condition of the fish population in those waters. We encourage anglers to harvest their limit of brown trout in Blacksmith Fork to allow the remaining fish to grow to a larger size. Fishing during the spring months can be very good. Use spinners, jigs or crankbaits to target trout. Panther Martin, Blue Fox and Mepps are all good spinner choices. Gold, silver, yellow and black are typically the most effective colors. Cast up and across the river, to likely spots, and then watch for strikes. If you're fly fishing, small midges, caddisflies, salmon flies and mayflies work well. A salmonfly hatch usually happens towards the end of May and early June. Streamers in various colors are also a good bet, but baitfish colors usually work the best. Black, brown, olive and olive/white are good colors to try. High flows will displace fish species into shallow water areas or along the banks. Use nightcrawlers on a tight line or other bait to catch fish under these conditions.
