This spring has been a good one for both smallmouth and largemouth bass. Smallies were once caught only in the Overton arm, but that has since changed as the fish have made their way into the Boulder Basin as well. The key with both fish is structure and a forage base. Catfish have begun to show up in the Vegas Wash area. Mornings and evenings are a good time to try your hand at reeling in some whisker fish. Much of the striped bass catch is small stuff, but there is word now and then about fish weighing somewhere in the mid-teens. Anglers are taking schooling stripers in the Vegas Bay area on cut bait as well as in the Hemenway area, though fishing has been somewhat slow overall.
These big stripers were caught December 1, at North Saddle cove at Lake Mead. Mike Ferris (left) shows off his 11.12 pound striper, Ronald Nix (center) displays this 11.4 pound stiper while Bob Wood (right) holds up his 24.11 pound monster.
