The 2011 MDR Halibut Derby is just around the corner. Anybody can fish in this year's 2011 MDR Halibut Derby. Get on a party boat, fish from the surf, bring your kayaks and inner tubes and call your friends with a small private boat. MDRA has changed the MDR Halibut Derby to a one day event, Saturday 14, and lowered entry price to just $30. Plus, it will be pretty easy for anybody to catch a qualifying fish this year, as the list of eligible fish has been expanded to include halibut, sand bass, rock fish and white seabass.
"We were looking for ways to make our traditional derby more inclusive to more anglers and at the same time put less pressure of our very local halibut stocks," said Ken Raymond, Director of this year's MDR Halibut Derby. Raymond listed the changes to this year's 2100 MDR Halibut Derby: - One day only event, (from 2 days)
- Expanded geographical areas allowed to fish
- Added sand bass, rock fish and white seabass to halibut as separate categories
- 20% weight credit for safe halibut releases
"We have re-invented our MDR Halibut Derby," said Bob Kissling, MDRA's President. "These changes will make it simple for anybody to participate and everybody to have a legitimate chance of winning a trophy."
Marina Del Rey Anglers is also hosting a special fishing seminar on Wednesday, May 4 at Burton Chase Park at the end of Mindanao Way in Marina Del Rey starting promptly at 7:00PM. Two local fishing pros will teach the seminar. Dick Schaffer owns Purfields Tackle Shop on Washington Blvd and David Yumori, AKA Captain Midnight, owns and operates the Slammer, a 6-pack charter in Marina Del Rey. Schaffer and Yumori are on the water every week and will share their secrets to consistently catch your targeted species in the Bay. Attending this seminar is a must for all derby and non derby anglers to enhance your derby chances for victory and increase your productivity on the water.
