FLAGSTAFF - It's that time of year to visit northern Arizona and hear the bugle of an amazing bull elk during the annul elk viewing workshop hosted by the Arizona Game and Fish Department and Mormon Lake Lodge.
Workshop hours are different this year and presentations are scheduled in the morning on Saturday, Aug. 17. The workshop includes a presentation and a field trip to watch elk in their natural habitat near Mormon Lake.
Mormon Lake is unique as it is only one of two natural lakes found in Arizona. During the early fall, hundreds of elk can be observed at the site and along Lake Mary Road.
"This workshop is a great way for people to enjoy the state's wildlife treasures and the important habitats they live in," Arizona Game and Fish Department Public Information Officer Shelly Shepherd said. "The department provides several wildlife watching events throughout the state year round."
The workshop will include presentations starting at 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17. Participants will attend a presentation located in the Kachina Room at Mormon Lake Lodge, and also go on a field trip. The field trip location will be determined that day based on where the elk are observed.
Spotting scopes will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring binoculars, water, snacks, and to wear appropriate clothing.
Anyone interested in registering for the workshop will need to contact the Flagstaff Game and Fish Office at (928) 774-5045 before 3 p.m. on Aug. 16.
Mormon Lake Lodge is located about 25 miles south of Flagstaff (take Lake Mary Road and turn off on Mormon Lake Road). For directions, visit www.mormonlakelodge.com.
