YUMA, Colo.--2,320 acres of riparian and sandhill habitat have been secured for hunters and wildlife watchers through an easement of property now known as the Arikaree State Wildlife Area (SWA).

The Arikaree SWA is located in Yuma County, seven miles east and six miles south of Wray, Colorado. This property sits on the Kansas-Colorado state line where Horse Creek flows into the Arikaree River and offers high concentrations of white-tailed deer, mule deer, and Rio Grande turkeys on the property. The property will be primarily used for hunting mule deer, white-tailed deer, and Rio Grande turkeys, as well as limited hunting opportunities for other small game species including bobwhite quail, doves, and rabbits.

"Hunters will want to put Arikaree SWA on their list to visit this fall," said Tom Kroening, area wildlife manager for the northeastern plains. "This brand new SWA will provide great opportunities because of its large size (over 2300 acres), riparian and upland habitats, and remote location. Hunters and wildlife watchers will find be pleased with the bounty of animals found on the property."

Regulations for the new SWA are as follows:
a. Public access is prohibited from June 1 through August 31.
b. Public access is restricted to foot traffic only from established parking areas.
c. Camping is prohibited.
d. Fires are prohibited.
e. Dog training is prohibited.
f. Target practice is prohibited, except when authorized by the area wildlife manager.
g. Horseback riding is prohibited.
h. Parking is restricted to designated parking areas only.
