Trout fishing is good for trollers who target creek arms such as Carson, Coyote or Mormon Creeks. Still-fishing from your boat in any of the creek arms is also very good. Bank anglers will have best luck under the Hwy 49 Stevenot Bridge, or the south side of the lake, where water is running into the lake. There is so much grass underwater along the bank- make sure to use a rig that will get your bait out of the weeds. If bank-fhishing or still-fishing from your boat, A sliding-sinker rig with at least a four-foot leader, a slip-float bobber and a bobber stop at 15 to 20-feet deep, or a drop-shot rig with a long (8-10 ft.) drop will work, and help keep your bait out of the grass. Live minnows or minnow imitations such as Berkely Gulp Minnows or Roboworm Alive Shad under a bobber or on a drop-shot rig has been particularly effective. If fishing with a sliding sinker rig, using bait that floats such as Berkley Select scented Power Bait, Power Eggs, or a crawler/marshmallow combo will help. Using a worm inflator helps too. Check your bait in shallow water to be sure it is buoyant before you toss it out. Use a light (4-pound) leader- fluorocarbon is best to fool those wary fish. Brown trout are active right now.

Bass bite is improving with spotted bass moving up and getting ready to spawn. Spotted bass start to spawn much earlier than largemouth, in cooler, deeper water. We have been seeing some quality fish landed recently. Drop-shotting small shad-patterned worms is the most productive. Jigs are getting the bigger fish. Throw swimbaits when the wind kicks up. Remember to practice catch and release. The Department of Fish and Game does not plant bass, so it is up to us to maintain our bass fishery. If you do decide to keep bass, please keep smaller spotted bass and turn the big spots and largemouth loose.
There are rumors of the crappie bite picking up a bit. Warmer water will have them moving up, preparing to spawn. The prefer rocky flat areas to spawn, and will be hanging in areas adjacent to rocky flats that have water and feed running into the lake right now. Target water running into the lake, such as waterfalls and other run-off areas, especially near structure. Bear Cove and Coyote Creek are usually great spots this time of year. Use red and white crappie jigs or small or medium minnows.Bait Barn (209) 874-3011 (209) 586-2383
