The BWO's filled the afternoon fishing on Tuesday, picking up at 2pm just as the clouds set up, and went to 5. Some Fall Cahills and big (#14) Mahoganies came off in good numbers for about 20 minutes, and got some fish to switch, but the BWO's fairly dominated the scene.?? On cloudy days, this will be the rule ??? strong emergences with trout feeling comfortable about sliding into softer feeding lies, and rising.?? On sunny days, the hatch is more likely to be less-intense, and shorter duration (although not always!), with trout tending to mostly stay on the nymphs.
There were also blizzard October Caddis emergences in the Canyon as recently as Tuesday evening.?? Even if they stopped coming off Wednesday (they won't), it'll take a good week for trout to stop looking for them once the hatch peters out.?? Give the big orange down-wings another week or two!

Deschutes RiverAlthough the Caddis bonanza is tapering off, it's still wise to keep a few stacked in your box. The saddle Caddis is small in size and best imitated with an Elk Hair Caddis in olive or the E/C Caddis # 16-20.?? The Pupa will hatch throughout the day with the majority hatching at dusk. The female are divers and deposits their eggs on the bottom. Take note again, that a Soft Hackle can imitate either the Pupa or the egg...... Read More
