Shaver Lake fishing slowed a little this week. I don't know why, perhaps the increase in wind. Talking to several trollers, some got into them, some didn't. A very good example is David Dungy of Shaver Lake. A month ago he and I went out and caught and released over 4 limits of mixed fish, with a big one at 4 pounds. His last trip out with another friend, only produced 3 fish for their trip. Dungy is a very good troller and normally bags them. He reported no big fish on his trip. A couple others said they caught between 1 to 2 limits. So, it could be hit or miss. Often changes in fishing take place in the late winter and very early spring. Last March on one charter trip, we picked up 2 limits then settled for 1.5 limits the next few trips out. So, it may be following a pattern. But, also remember that there has been plenty of fishing activity this winter with a lot of fish caught. We did not have much off time. One of the big fish that came in this week was caught by Gary Kochera of Clovis. He said that he was fishing in the Black Rock area and had poor luck when the big guy hit. It was a beauty of a fish. He took it to the Herb Bauer's/ Shaver Visitor Bureau official weigh station at Ken's Market where it was measured at 25 inches and weighed 7.10 pounds. I am certain a few more trophies have been taken this week, but no one has reported them. Trollers continue to do the best at 20 to 27 feet deep using a combination of blade/spinner's tipped with corn or crawler. Weighted flashers can get you into the desired area, but downriggers offer more flexibility. Black Rock, Eagle Point, mouth of Boy Scout Cove and the island have provided the best results this week. For bank fishermen, those who are willing to walk to road 3 or Black Rock have had a couple trophies bump their rod. Power Bait or crawlers can be the best. Other good spots are the Point, roads 1 and 2.
