Lake George - Mammoth Lakes, CA

Fish Spot Details

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout
Lake George, located at 9,000 feet in the Mammoth Lakes Basin, is a compact alpine stillwater fishery offering consistent rainbow and brook trout action in a dramatic mountain setting. Though small (38 acres), the lake provides excellent shoreline and float tube access, with fly fishing peaking from late May through early July and again in September.

Trout feed actively after ice-out, targeting midges, callibaetis, and damselflies. Indicator rigs with balanced leeches and chironomids are productive early in the season. Later, dry fly opportunities improve, particularly for brook trout, with caddis, Adams, and terrestrial patterns proving effective.

Small streamers and buggers fished on intermediate lines can draw strikes from larger browns, especially near the lake’s drop-offs and rock walls. Early mornings and evenings are best in summer when recreational activity and surface temperatures increase.

Easily accessed by road, Lake George is well-suited for both novice and experienced anglers. Shoreline casting is effective, though float tubes allow coverage of deeper zones. The lake is stocked regularly and supports wild populations, making it ideal for quick sessions, instruction, or scenic day trips.

Lake George’s balance of accessibility, consistent action, and alpine ambiance makes it a valued fly fishing destination in the Eastern Sierra.
