Big Chico Creek - Chico, CA

Fish Spot Details

Fish Species: Chinook Salmon, Steelhead, Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout
Big Chico Creek, right in Chico, California, is a great spot for anglers looking for a peaceful fishing experience. The creek is home to rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, and even some brown trout, making it a solid choice for both beginners and seasoned anglers.

Fishing here is allowed year-round, but there are a few rules to keep the ecosystem healthy. The lower section of the creek is open for fishing until February 15th, while the upper part above Bear Hole is open until April 15th. Anglers are encouraged to use single-hook artificial lures with barbless hooks to help keep the fish population thriving.

In 2024, a survey counted around 3,691 rainbow trout in the creek, mostly hanging out in the riffles. This is great news for fly fishers, as the upper parts of the creek are where you'll find the most action.

Getting to Big Chico Creek is easy, especially if you're heading to Bidwell Park, where the creek runs through some pretty scenic areas. Whether you're fishing from the shore or wading in, it's a nice, quiet spot to enjoy the day. Just be sure to check local regulations before you go to make sure you're fishing responsibly.
