Black River East Fork - Alpine, AZ

Fish Spot Details

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout
The East Fork of the Black River near Alpine, AZ, is a small, high-elevation stream that supports Apache, rainbow, and brown trout. Special regulations protect native Apache trout, requiring barbless artificial lures or flies and catch-and-release practices in many areas.

Fly anglers find success with dry-dropper rigs, nymphs, and attractor dries during summer. The stream is narrow and shallow, ideal for wading and sight-fishing. Trout range from 8–14 inches, with the occasional larger brown in deeper pools.

Access is limited to Forest Roads, with dispersed camping and a few primitive sites nearby. Water clarity fluctuates after rain, but summer and fall offer the best fishing conditions.

The East Fork provides a unique opportunity to catch native trout in a remote, unspoiled setting with light gear and ethical techniques.
