Fourth Of July Lake - Sprague, WA

Fish Spot Details

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout
Fourth of July Lake, near Sprague, WA, is a unique seasonal fishery open only from late November through March. Managed specifically for winter trout fishing, the lake offers excellent cold-season angling for quality-sized rainbow trout.

This 110-acre lake is stocked annually by WDFW, and fish often reach 16–20 inches by the time the season opens. Anglers can expect solid action from shore, float tubes, or even on the ice when conditions allow. Ice fishing typically peaks in January and February, with standard jigs and bait presentations producing fish near submerged weed lines and drop-offs.

For traditional winter fishing, PowerBait, nightcrawlers, and salmon eggs are effective fished off the bottom. Fly anglers using streamers, chironomids, or balanced leeches also do well during warmer spells or when fish cruise the shallows.

Access is basic—a gravel lot on the north end of the lake offers space for parking and walking in. No motors are allowed, and there are no formal facilities, so plan accordingly for winter conditions.

Because of its short open season and strong fish growth, Fourth of July Lake delivers one of the best cold-weather trout fisheries in eastern Washington. It’s a dependable option when most other lakes are closed, especially for those seeking solitude and quality trout.
