Lake Davis - Portola, CA

Fish Spot Details

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Largemouth Bass, Brown Bullhead
Lake Davis, located near Portola in Plumas County, CA, is a renowned stillwater fishery tailored to fly anglers targeting rainbow trout. Covering over 4,000 acres, the lake offers excellent access, consistent insect hatches, and abundant trout ranging from 16 to 24 inches.

Fly fishing peaks during spring and fall. After ice-out, chironomid hatches dominate, drawing trout into the shallows where they can be targeted with indicator rigs and balanced leeches. As water warms, damselflies, callibaetis, and scuds also become active. The north end of the lake near Jenkins Point and Fairview provides the most productive fly water, particularly in the morning when surface activity is high.

Subsurface techniques are most effective, especially with chironomids and leeches under indicators or on slow intermediate lines. Dry fly opportunities arise during callibaetis hatches, particularly in calm weather. In fall, trout return to shallow zones, making stripping streamers along weed beds highly effective.

Lake Davis is open year-round and well-maintained by California State Parks, with ample parking, boat launches, and shoreline access. A float tube or small boat greatly enhances reach and presentation.

Due to its elevation and consistent insect activity, Lake Davis is one of the best instructional waters in the state, ideal for both novice and experienced anglers. Its combination of accessibility, reliable trout action, and scenic Sierra setting make it a must-fish destination for stillwater fly anglers.
