Fall is in full swing on the Metolius, and while the Green Drake hatch is long gone, there’s still plenty to get excited about. PMDs, Mahogany Duns, BWOs, and October Caddis continue to hatch in abundance, keeping the fish active. The section of the river above Allingham Bridge is now closed until May 22, but don’t worry—there’s still great fishing below Allingham Bridge, which is open year-round. This stretch, including the canyon, Bridge 99 area, and hatchery section, remains productive as we head into winter.
Nymphing is a solid choice right now. Caddis pupae, Perdigons, Egan’s Frenchies, and golden stonefly nymphs are all working well. As kokanee salmon make their way upstream, rainbow trout are keying in on the drifting eggs—be sure to have egg patterns in your box.
For Bull Trout, early mornings are your best bet. Larger streamers like Dolly Llamas, Dungeons, and various white streamers are producing, and euro jigs or smaller jig streamers are also effective.
