Bear Lake is beginning to ice over, and the lake is about 95-percent covered by ice. You cannot launch a boat, and the ice isn't thick enough for ice fishing. This could change if any wind develops and takes the ice off the lake. All of the ramps have been plowed and are currently down to the concrete. The Bonneville cisco run is in full swing, and the run has likely peaked. Anglers were able to dipnet limits of fish in under five minutes yesterday morning. Dipnetting should be good this weekend (January 25-26), but conditions will vary, depending on the wind and ice. Remember, in order to keep a cutthroat trout from Bear Lake, it must have a healed fin clip (usually the adipose fin). Cutthroat trout with all fins intact must be released, including fish that are tagged with all of their fins. You might also consider releasing large lake trout in order to maintain the fishery. Lake trout can easily live longer than 35 years in Bear Lake. We will update the fishing-conditions recording either every other day or every day, depending on weather and how the cisco run is going.
