The Madison has cooled off nicely with our recent showers. Wet weather is both good news and bad news. The remaining PMD's and Epeorus will emerge allowing us to fish to risers for periods of the day. We are also seeing the beginning of the August Baetis tricaudatus emergence which can be terrific. The bad news is the nasty weather will slow down our spruce moth, hopper, ant and beetle fishing. Nymphing will be a solid option when the fish aren't rising. Hopefully the weather will strike a nice balance of warmth and cloudy weather so we can have a good bit of everything. As long as the Madison stays cool it will continue to fish well.

The Gallatin is fishing with caddis, golden stones and hoppers. If you are up there in the next couple days you may still find Pale Morning Duns. This river is a good option right now because of its cold water fed by the high mountain streams. Nymphing will be the best option mid afternoon. Small mayfly nymphs and serendipities will pick up fish throughout the day....... Read More
