Water Conditions

The Little Truckee River is flowing big right now due to Boca Reservoir starting to fill up. Flows between Stampede and Boca are around 340 CFS. The water is cold, but still wadable. Because of the good clarity and manageable flows, anglers can find some dry fly opportunities here in the afternoon.

Tips for the Week

With flows higher this week than last, more fish seem to be moving into the river system. Nymph fishing is still the preferred tactic for most anglers, with some occasional dry fly opportunities throughout the day. Use stealthy tactics for either method as the fish on this river are easily spooked. For nymphing on the Little Truckee, anglers should use more weight than in previous weeks. Add enough weight to cut through the heavier currents, but don’t add too much to where the line is dragging near the bottom of the riverbed. The added weight should be just enough to aid in slowing down your presentation to the fish, giving them more chances to see your flies.

Suggested Flies

Some fly favorites to try on the Little Truckee River this week are Pheasant Tails, RS2 in Olive, Larger Hares Ear Nymphs, Two Bit Hookers, or March Browns.
