Water Conditions

Flows on the Truckee River have picked up in certain sections. In Tahoe City, water has started to be released from Lake Tahoe into the river. Because of this, flows have picked up to around 300 CFS here. As you head towards the town of Truckee, flows pick up even more to around 475 CFS. Though the flows are higher throughout the river, the fishing has been great. The current flows are 302 CFS out of Tahoe City, 467 CFS through Truckee, 650 CFS near Martis Creek, and 992 CFS near Farad.

Tips for the Week

With the higher flows, indicator nymphing is still proving to be the best strategy on the Truckee River right now. There are a few spots anglers can try to tightline, but spots are limited because of the wading difficulty. Folks using indicator nymphing as their technique of choice should use a good amount of weight to get down to the bite zone and a large indicator to hold the weight and sense the bite more easily. Using large anchor flies will also help the fly reach the fish. Anglers can also try streamer fishing as a technique. Using streamers right now can lead to some nice-sized fish.

Suggested Flies or Lures

Some fly favorites to try this week on the Truckee River are Size 14 Dirty Birds in olive or rust, Size 14 &16 Bead Head Hare’s Ears in Olive, Size 16 Burkes Crystal Hunchbacks, or Size 6 Mini Loop Sculpins.
